Tips & Advice
'Keeping Your Pets Cool This Summer'
- as seen in Westside News & South-West News
Your pet gets as hot as you do in our hot Queensland summer months!
Here are some great tips to assist you in keeping your pet cool! A lot of this is general common sense, easy and very cost effective – keep your pets cool, take action now for our hot summer months!
- If you are going on holidays and you don’t know what kind of shade or facilities that will be available to your pet, leave your pet at home and let Pony & Pooch Petcare keep your pet cool while you are away
- Ensure shade is readily available in the yard during all times of the day or make shade available by setting up a shade cloth etc. Better to plant some trees – provide shade for you as well – nice and cool spot for pets to lie under trees in the dirt
- Heaps of water available – 2 bowls in case one gets knocked over
- Place water bowls in the shade, and best in terracotta dishes not metal bowls as they tend to get very hot and heat up the water
- Don’t leave dogs in the cars under any circumstances (or children!)
- Report any such incidents to the RSPCA immediately
- Careful where your dog walks on the hot ground – eg the bitumen gets very hot and can burn their feet – even walking from the car park to the beach – carry or run them across such surfaces
- Take dogs swimming in the morning or afternoon – not in the middle of the day as this is the hottest part of the day and they can suffer heat stroke too
- Give them a drink during and after walk/swim – always carry water with you to beach or on walks
- Hose/bucket pets down during hot days
- Watch for signs of heat exhaustion – pets suffer from this as well as humans!
